Tucked away in a quiet area, Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani is an attractive deli store and restaurant that offers a unique atmosphere and authentic Greek cuisine. We visited this hidden gem after reading numerous positive reviews, and we were not disappointed.
Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome and were fortunate to get a table on a busy Monday evening. We opted for sharing plates, as we wanted a light dinner. The bread was fresh, and the dishes came out quickly. We enjoyed tarama, dolmades, a chickpea dish, aubergine and courgette dish with feta, and smoked mackerel. The food was flavorful, fresh, and homemade, with a wine recommendation that complemented the meal perfectly.
The restaurant’s ambiance was lively, and the service was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful in explaining the menu and offering wine suggestions. We tried a variety of traditional dishes, including marinated anchovies, smoked eel, stuffed vine leaves, sausage dishes, salads, pastry parcels, and baked aubergine, courgette, and tomatoes. The meal concluded with a complimentary Greek yogurt and sweet caramelized carrot dessert, which was delightful.
Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani offers incredible value, with our bill totaling just $20 for an appetizer, two main dishes, and a complimentary dessert. The quality of the food and the service enticed us to return for a second visit, breaking our rule of not dining at the same restaurant twice while traveling.
The extensive menu featured an array of delicious dishes, including meatless options and smoked fish. Despite trying 12 different dishes during our two visits, we couldn’t help but be impressed by the meatballs and smoked eggplant. The bread, though not the highlight, served its purpose as a vehicle for the delicious spreads.
The professional, attentive, and friendly service contributed to the overall dining experience. The indoor ventilation was satisfactory, and the restaurant had a lively buzz, with a steady stream of guests heading to the roof terrace. In conclusion, Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic, flavorful, and reasonably priced Greek meal in Athens.
