As a couple who appreciates the beauty of history and nature, we were eager to join the Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour from Athens. The tour offered a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and relaxation, all within a convenient time frame.
Starting with the hotel pick-up, our tour escort/host made sure everyone was comfortable and provided a brief introduction to our itinerary. The minivan was well-maintained, ensuring a smooth ride along the picturesque shoreline roads.
The journey to Cape Sounion offered breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and south suburbs of Athens. Our first stop was Lake Vouliagmeni, where we spent 15 minutes admiring the stunning volcanic lake that lies below sea level. This unique spot was perfect for capturing amazing photographs and marveling at the beauty of nature.
Next, we headed to Sounio Beach. The hour-long stop allowed us to relax by the deep blue waters, sipping on refreshments and enjoying a light meal. Swimming at the beach was an option, although we decided to simply soak in the picturesque views.
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly our visit to the Temple of Poseidon. Our host provided detailed background information about the 5th century B.C. temple, dedicated to the god of the sea, Poseidon. The location atop a towering sea cliff offered incredible views of the Aegean, and we were lucky to catch the famously beautiful sunset as well.
Although entrance fees to the Temple of Poseidon were not included (5 euros in Nov-March, 10 euros in April-October), we felt that the price was reasonable for the experience we had. The small-group setting provided an intimate atmosphere, allowing us to connect with our fellow travelers and enjoy a personalized experience.
The tour concluded with a drive back to Athens, where we were dropped off at our hotel. Reflecting on our experience, we were extremely satisfied with the Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Small-Group Tour. It provided the perfect opportunity to explore the ancient Temple of Poseidon, admire the natural beauty of the Aegean Sea, and learn about ancient Greece in a comfortable and well-organized setting. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Athens who is seeking a unique, memorable, and convenient half-day excursion.
