We recently participated in the Small Group, Delicious Athens Food Tour, and it was a truly delightful and immersive experience that allowed us to discover the mouthwatering world of traditional Greek food. Our knowledgeable guide led us through off-the-beaten-path residential areas, introducing us to an authentic side of Athens that is often overlooked by tourists.
The tour consisted of visits to 10 carefully curated specialty food shops, which included local bakeries, restaurants, and an open-air market. At each stop, we had the opportunity to taste a variety of traditional Athenian delicacies such as honey, spices, sweets, cured meat, cheese, olive oil, and the much-celebrated Greek souvlaki. The small group size of 12 people or fewer ensured an intimate and personal experience, allowing us to ask questions and learn more about the foods we tasted.
Our culinary adventure began at Syntagma Square, where we met our guide and fellow food enthusiasts. We strolled through the bustling alleys of Varvakios, the fish, meat, and vegetable market known as the true ‘belly of Athens’, as well as through the backstreets of Syntagma and the outskirts of Plaka, Monastiraki, and the trendy area of Psiri. Each neighborhood had its own unique charm and atmosphere, and our guide provided informative commentary on the culinary history and traditions of Athens throughout the tour.
The food tastings during the tour were not only delicious but also offered insights into the flavors and ingredients that form the basis of Greek cuisine. We enjoyed sipping on aromatic Greek coffee and indulging in traditional Greek sweets, which left our taste buds craving for more.
The tour concluded at Monastiraki, leaving us with a full stomach and a deeper appreciation for Greek culinary culture. Although transfers to and from the meeting point were not included and any extra food or drinks were to be purchased separately, these factors did not detract from our overall enjoyment of the experience.
