There’s no better place to discover John Craxton these days than Athens. If you haven’t already checked into The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture’s exhibition on the life and work of the UK-born, Greek-hearted contemporary painter, now is the time to do so. Often overlooked by art historians and criticised for “pushing hard against the handicap of happiness” in his work, as well as for his complicated relationship with fellow painter Lucian Freud, Craxton lived a heartening and bohemian life. The exhibition’s curator and Craxton’s biographer, Ian Collins, adds to the experience by sharing insider stories of the artist’s past with the public during guided tours (in English) on selected dates in late May.
The guided tours are supported by our very first This is Athens City Festival – check our full programme here.
