The Central Municipal Library of the Municipality of Athens is one of the oldest libraries in Greece. It was founded by the mayor Anargyros Petrakis in 1835 and today it is housed in the traditional building at 2 Domokou Street in Larissa Station. The library’s collection includes rare publishing material and consists of 55,000 titles of books on a variety of subjects, a newspaper archive from 1863 to the present day, an archive of 900 titles of periodicals from 1834 to the present day, an archive of official gazettes from 1833 to the present day, a rich bibliographic and photographic material on the history of the city of Athens. It is also worth mentioning that the library’s collection includes the libraries of the major donors Konstantinos ( Agathofronas ) Nikolopoulos, George Haritakis, Dimitris Kaburoglou, Elias Tsirimokos and G. & I. Derveniotis, as well as the personal collection of George Vlachos, which was acquired by purchase. At the disposal of adult users there are two bright and comfortable reading rooms with free internet access. The library has special areas for children, which are suitably equipped to meet their needs for knowledge, entertainment and creation. As part of its development, the Children’s Department and the Music Library are operating.
